The highland estates
Yamamoto is a district of warrior estates, training grounds and mountain sanctuaries rather than a single crowded port. Roads follow ridges between walled compounds and farming valleys. Its houses provide officers to other islands and regard military competence as a public obligation, not merely a noble accomplishment.
Arbitration and rivalry
Because several powerful houses meet in the highlands, Yamamoto became a place where feuds could be judged before they damaged the wider realm. Formal contests, witnessed oaths and carefully negotiated marriages contain some rivalries. Others continue through competition for appointments, students and custody of important shrines.
Essan discipline
Yamamoto's custodians treat Essan knowledge as something that must be disciplined through character and service. That belief can protect dangerous material, but it can also make officials slow to recognise expertise outside the warrior class. Myaks exploit pride by offering apparently honourable paths to power.
