Velkira expanded as overseas trade grew more valuable. Its merchant houses now argue that maritime wealth deserves greater influence inside the river league.

The Jade Sea gate
Velkira stands where Vaar-Kashai's river traffic meets the Jade Sea. Ocean-going hulls anchor beyond the shallows while narrow craft carry cargo inland. Spice warehouses, hardwood yards and pilots' houses crowd the safer banks, giving the city a maritime identity distinct from the upstream river courts.
Merchants and the Rain Crown
Velkira's merchant houses argue that overseas wealth should bring a stronger voice within the League of Nine Rivers. Upstream delegates answer that the port prospers only because shared flood works keep its channels open. Each storm season renews the argument over taxes, dredging labour and naval protection.
A contested crossing
Tamakari traders are common enough to be familiar but foreign enough to attract scrutiny. Relics can pass through ordinary cargo, and Myak agents can exploit rival customs offices along the waterfront. Harbour wardens therefore compare ship records with upriver manifests, although bribery and family loyalties still leave gaps.
