The lower river city
Ythranis stands where Lignett's controlled river approaches the southern bay. Locks, canals and warehouses divide the city into narrow working districts. Barges arrive under the authority of the lock houses, but seagoing merchants bring money and ideas those houses cannot completely contain.
Wealth against inherited control
Merchant councils increasingly challenge the families who claim hereditary command of the waterworks. Their dispute concerns tolls, debt and coerced labour, but also who may speak for the city. Dockworkers and escaped labourers have created informal networks across districts the authorities struggle to monitor.
Old machinery, new danger
Fragments of the oldest hydraulic system may be Essan in origin. Most citizens know only that certain channels behave strangely under pressure. Myak agents could exploit maintenance contracts or sabotage investigations to gain access while the political factions blame one another.
